Sims 3 AAR: The McGuires

I've been watching some YouTube videos by people who've built really great houses in Sims 3, and I really wanted to do that. So, I bought the "Sims 3 with Pets" package. I quickly learned that a player does not begin the game with anywhere near enough money to build the kind of house I wanted to build.

My first attempt at the game (yesterday) was a noob fiasco. I bought a "starter" home, went looking for employment, and ended up with a part-time job cleaning up in a restaurant, which didn't start for three days. Money was tight, and I realized I needed a wife to bring in a second income. I went to the town swimming pool, met a nice lady who liked me, but I daren't ask her on a date because I had no money. :( The next day, I went to the equestrian center, met a slender brunette, and spent several hours talking to her before I realized she was a man. :faint: The next day, I went to the beach, spent most of the day talking to a lady, but she was in a relationship. The next morning, I was visited by the repo lady. :crying: Screw that. :q:

Today, I restarted the game. This time, I created a character [Garrett McGuire] who could make a lot of money; his goal is to become a world-class surgeon. Someone of that stature needs a wife who can run his social-climbing ambitions. It was weird "creating" a wife; I'm used to dealing with the neurotic messes life that throws at me. I built a woman who, on the surface appears to be, an arm ornament: blond, perky, pretty, a party animal. But Mandy's also athletic and has ambitions to be a jockey. We have a thoroughbred horse, named Checker.

Day 1: I headed to the town hospital to begin my medical career. In this game, you have to start a career at the bottom rung of the ladder, which for the medical profession turns out to be that of organ donor. :faint: I hope I get promoted before too many parts are whittled away. I start work tomorrow. After a quick celebratory snack, I headed to the library to see if they had a book on how to be a doctor. Nope. Then I went to the bookstore. Nope again, but I found a book on cooking. My wife has cooking talents, and so I got it for her.

Meanwhile, Mandy rode Checker to the equestrian center to see if she could find a job [nope] and to see if they had facility at which to board Checker [nope]. She did sign up for horse-riding classes. She talked to a woman in the center to see if she could get a lead on a job, but it turns out the woman merely sells snacks. So right now, I need to get them home. I just noticed that Checker is VERY thirsty, and there's a pond in the back yard. I also have to figure out a way to build a "box stall" on my property.

Oh noes! I just found Checker collapsed on the ground of the equestrian center. She was about 10 yards away from a water trough. I told her to drink. She got up and did. Problem solved--I hope. There's a police officer nearby. I hope Mandy doesn't get busted for animal abuse.
