I've downloaded the free demo for Combat Mission: Fortress Italy, have read the manual [albeit it's for the actual game, not the demo], downloaded FRAPS so that I can take screenshots, spent an afternoon wrestling with the camera until I realized that I had a malfunction mouse which was causing the trouble, and wrestled with my computer's on/off switch. But at last, I'm ready to proceed:
Situation:
While the American army is advancing east along the north shore of Sicily, my unit is detached to take care of an outpost of Germans in the hills who are calling down artillery on the U.S. column. My scouting unit has a light tank, two infantry squads, two heavy machine gun teams and a 60 mm mortar team. My CO also has radio contact with two indirect fire 81 mm mortar teams.

My two objectives are the town center and a church on the west end of town.

As you can see, the Germans in the town have a pretty open field of fire across the valley...

...except along the east edge of the valley. There's a long windbreak of trees, which should supply come good concealment.

At first I was hesitant about a potential ambush waiting for me in those trees, but the more I thought about it, the more it makes sense for the Germans to concentrate their forces in the protective buildings of the town.
